Dear all,
I am refelcting actually on the naming 'water systems'.
In German the name for a big river is 'Strom', in English also 'stream'.
And also electricity is called 'Strom', it is really the exact same word.
A river is also called 'Fluss', which means 'flow'.
I find also interesting that the drainage and sewer systems under the towns is called 'canalization', in German 'Kanalisation'.
Canal in German is also 'Kanal'. And in English the canal is close to channel, which is also used for communication.
One more interesting word is 'Weiher'. This is a pond, so a not flowing water.
It is pronounced the same as 'wire' in English.
And I think the canals around the cities or castles had often not flowing water, so they had 'Weihers' around.
Every old village or castle had a pond nearby.
I am living in an area in Germany with thousands of carp ponds, connected with little canals.
I find it very interesting that the words in the water systems are more or less same as for power, information and communication systems.
