Caen, France - Strange anomoly

OK, so I'm a bit confused by this one. Here is a pic of the centre of Caen, now:

Nice repurposed Star structure sitting in the middle. But here's how it looked in 1944:

Some lining up of circular mounds (or maybe used to be devices) between the centre of the city and inland port system.

There are also a huge number of sports tracks in Caen.
